Tap-In — Nichole Robertson

It’s time for Tap-In. Today’s guest needs no introduction! We’re in for a real treat — I am so pleased to welcome talented photographer and writer, Nichole Robertson — author of Paris in Color. Time to swoon…What would a perfect day look like?
Coffee with my husband and a chat with the kids. A good book by the fire. A long walk. Soup and bread for lunch. A board game with the kids. Coffee and chat with a friend. A sitter, steak, frites and wine with my husband. Kiss the kids goodnight. Curl up on the couch with the cat and another good book. Bed (ahem!).

List five words that best describe you.
Optimistic. Idealistic. Perfectionist. Kind. Happy. When you create, are you messy? How much is planned versus spontaneous? Do you hold an outcome in your mind’s eye or is the end product a surprise?
All of the best things I’ve done were unplanned or a happy accident. The Paris Color Project is a great example. What started as blog photos became something much larger. It was such a raw, personal experience for me, and even though some of my initial photos make my skin crawl now, it was so very real and exhilarating. I think that’s what engaged my blog readers.

What do you like to cook? Does your approach to cooking mirror your creative process in anyway?
I LOVE to cook. In fact, I’m always surprised when someone tells me they hate it. It seems odd to turn something we all do three or more times a day into a chore. For me, it’s a chance to unwind, try new things and connect with friends and family. Most of my favorite memories revolve around food and gatherings. I love contributing to others’ memories.

I cook everything. I am not afraid to try new or difficult recipes and welcome all challenges. I tend to cook a lot of comfort food that reminds me of home (Columbia, PA). When I make my mom’s vegetable soup or my grandma’s apple pie I’m instantly transported. That’s powerful. I don’t really feel creative as much as I do domestic, and I love spending hours in the kitchen if it means smiles on my family’s faces. What scares you?
Not being true to myself. This drives me, and always has. I am not afraid to shake things up to stay aligned with my values. Every few months I take stock of where I’ve been and plan the future. Things change and priorities change, and I never want inertia to determine my course.
