Pictures around our home in April. Some days there is sun. Most days an April rain shower. The two gently coax life out of the ground. I spent a few hours digging in the dirt yesterday, edging my flower gardens. Happiness!I get lost in the scent of a hyacinth. It makes me want to dance. And dream.Golden hour sunshine coming through translucent flower petals of my daffies. Gold. Breakfast today: A fried egg topped with hollandaise sauce, scallions and spinach, a slice of my husband’s homemade bread, organic local butter, and chaga tea from Maine. Hubby and I have been drinking this healthful elixir, made from a special fungi that grows on birch trees. Chaga is a powerful anti-oxidant, known to ward off all kinds of disease and keep the body young. It has an earthy taste with a hint of vanilla. I sweeten it with dark amber maple syrup tapped from a tree nearby. Making chaga tea is easy. You take a few chunks of the mushroom and boil it in a pot of water. Once it boils, simmer it for one to two hours to release the medicinal properties. My family and I are going on a chaga hike soon, to see if we can find the fungus growing on birches in our own backwoods. If you want to learn more about chaga, this guy is the expert.A stroll on the beach with my family by the Cribstone Bridge in Harpswell. With the onset of the warmer weather comes project time! — even if there is a light rain falling outside. My Love was teaching our son to use a drill today, having him practice on an old board. Next up — a farm table for our deck!Spring in Maine can sometimes be chilly enough to start a fire in the woodstove.
