matcha tea ritual

Although I love my morning cup of coffee, I am slowly weaning from it, incorporating a healthier hot drink into my breakfasts. Of course I don’t think I ever want to cut out coffee completely, but am reducing my intake to make room for sips of something with more health benefits. Kinfolk, volume 8, which is a publication about “discovering new things to cook, make, and do” focuses on Japanese culture. I am learning about the art of preparing and drinking Japanese matcha tea, which is made from green tea leaves ground into a fine powder. The tea leaves that are designated for matcha are grown in protective shade and harvested within a small window of time. The leaves are gently dried in the sun, the stems and veins are removed, and the remainder of the leaves are ground into a fine powder that is sweet and brilliant green in color. The perfect cup of matcha tea involves whisking the powder into boiling water, creating a froth, and then letting it sit for a few minutes before drinking. As the tea continues to cool while you sip it slowly, the flavor will change and delight the tongue.

Where can you purchase matcha green tea powder? I order my matcha tea, along with lots of other healthy body care products, natural supplements, and organic foods from vitacost.com.
