As I document my world year after year in photos, paying attention to the finer details of each season, I begin to recognize patterns, cycles, tendencies and unique occurrences. As we transition from autumn to winter here in Maine (and I don’t go by the official dates of the seasons, more the feel in the weather), I notice that the earth outside my door is doing a dance of sorts, trying to find its rhythm. We find ourselves in short sleeves hiking through our woods one moment, only to wake up to snow-coated grounds just days later. Temperature rises again. Snow melts. But it’s only a temporary balm. Freezing temperatures return by morning, prompting us to light a fire in the woodstove to warm our bones. I am slowly giving in to winter. Easing in just as the earth is doing. Matching my own internal rhythm to its music. Here we go!
