Soul

Have you ever written something and wondered where it came from? Did the words come from your soul? The whispers of an angel? The collective unconscious? My friend Maddie Mulvaney invited me to do an interview for her blog a while back. The questions were all about soul. I often find myself rereading what I wrote, learning from my own words — they serve as an inner compass. I wanted to share some excerpts with you…

Maddie: What does ‘soul’ mean to you personally?

Susan: Soul is the essence of who you are. The body serves as temporary housing for this energy called soul. Personality, passions, likes, dislikes, responses to life challenges, responses to joy, ability to find happiness, and ability to feel and receive and give love are all a part of it. Each soul has a history, and each time that it comes around in a different body (my belief) it aims to learn new things to better itself. These new things are often challenging and sometimes painful to learn, but with perseverance and good intent, the end result will be light. When you are truthful (true to yourself and others) and giving of unselfish love, your soul is on its right path. I used to believe so strongly in destiny. Now I have a different view as I enter my 40’s. Destiny is more about energy pulls and attractions, but free will is the greatest determinant of how a life will unfold. Each choice you make is precious, and ripples out into the world, multiplying as it moves. Your choices effect both you and the lives of others, so choose wisely. I’ve learned that making good choices is the key to a fulfilling and happy life — to a fulfilled and happy soul. And if you fall down or make mistakes, you must get up, dust yourself off, be strong, own your actions and get back on your path. You will know when you are on it, because worry, anger and fear will subside, and instead you will feel peaceful, content, and aligned, and you will attract goodness.

Maddie: How does it express itself in the verve and essence of your daily life?

Susan: I am aiming to live as authentically as possible with each moment, each choice. I am aware of big picture lessons that my soul is working on and I try to be open and intuitive, attempting to make good choices on a daily basis, to get me closer to these soul realizations/soul actualizations. I think it is crucial to take time for what is important to us in our busy lives — to connect with self and with others in healthy, loving ways. Simplifying life and finding the beauty in the simple will help to get us there. There are so many teachings to be found in the simplest of things. Like a warm and genuine smile, for instance:)

Getting in touch with our creative selves enhances life — the life of self, and the lives of others when we take the time to share our creativity. Creativity is about giving and growing life, and it is my belief that if we have more of it in the world, destructive behaviors will diminish. Earth is hungry for this. Earth needs this.
