Today’s Tap-In guest is sure to delight and inspire — my dear friend, mixed-media artist, strong and gentle soul, Becky Shander!
What is happiness?
For me, happiness primarily comes from the gratitude I experience in the simple everyday things. Things like the soothing sunshine during the dreary winter months, or a big bear hug from my husband, baking banana bread with my daughter, or enjoying a good long conversation with a close friend…and of course anything having to do with chocolate. I also get a peaceful happy feeling while I’m creating. Having time alone to make things with my hands keeps me feeling centered and slightly buzzed at the same time.
What types of people are you most drawn to?
I’m drawn to people who are bright and optimistic, caring and kind. I like to be around people who seem comfortable in their skin. I like it when people are real with me…and when I can be real with them. And lately I’ve noticed that the people in my life are interested in things that are outside of themselves…they are compassionate, loving and giving…they want to make a positive difference in this world.
Do you have any advice on how to connect with creative spirit?
I need to be in a quiet place, both physically and mentally, in order to hear my thoughts. It is usually during these calm moments that insights or inspirations will come to my awareness. Whether I’m doing something physical, such as taking a walk around the neighborhood, or passive, such as riding as a passenger in a car, or creating in my studio (very often in a meditative-like state), I’ve learned that being quiet helps me to listen. And when you’re listening, really listening, a message will appear.
Do you have any life mottos? Any pieces of wisdom to share with us?
Life is nothing without love. And for me, love begins with giving…freely, generously, without selfish intent or expectations. The gift or exchange of love gives me a feeling of hope, and with hope in the heart I feel light and playful yet peaceful, and open to inspiration…which usually leads me to create. Some of my best ideas were born through experiences of deep and meaningful love.
