The amount of energy that goes into birthing a vegetable garden is surprising. My memory trails back to February, when we combed the seed catalog, attaching sticky notes to our dreams. We sowed them in tiny starter cells in April, tended to them daily with water and nutrients under our indoor grow lights, pinched the leaves, staked the babes, hardened them off in wind and sun, transplanted them into the big girl garden come Memorial Day, fertilized, kept pests in check organically, weeded, watered, more staking. Talked and sang to them, coaxed them along. And suddenly. One day. To our surprise. Oh I love surprises. Look! Bounty! Do a dance, thank and gently pick them, put them to your lips, kiss, drink the sun and the rain. Celebrate! Oh, there is really nothing better. Love!
