A Painting or a Photograph?

Susan Tuttle PhotographySusan Tuttle PhotographyI relish in wonder and experimentation, as it leads to discovery, surprise and unexpected beauty, growth, and sometimes even new direction. I am both a DSLR photographer/Photoshop gal as well as an iPhoneographer who uses photography apps to alter her iPhone shots. I rarely mix the two, and I gave that some thought recently. When you visit my Instagram gallery you will find purely iPhone work (shot with an iPhone and manipulated with iPhone apps) — and this is something I will stay committed to on IG. There is something unique and special about the medium (using only the tiny phone in your back pocket to make art, even gallery-worthy pieces). Using Photoshop with an iPhone piece would somehow render it less special I think. Another reason I keep the two separate is because I enter many mobile art contests that require entries to be created purely with an iPhone device.

There are exceptions to everything, of course. I have two favorite apps that I use to apply painterly effects to my iPhone photos — Glaze and DistressedFX. I was dying to use them with some recent DSLR shots I took in my flower gardens that are exploding with color. So I did, along with Camera Bag 2 (which comes in app form and as software for a Mac or PC), and here are the results!

Now and then it’s good to break the rules.
