The Violets

Susan Tuttle PhotographyThe violets. I have fallen under their sweet and mysterious spell. These amethyst-toned gems have spread like wildfire in my gardens since I planted a few tender handfuls of them several years ago …lush waves of velvety purple delicate petals that quiver and roll softly in the balmy May breeze. I observe them closely and they remind me of snowflakes …each one unique in form, coloring, and markings. I am so taken. Enchanted by the dark inky blue depths of these tiny beauties.

And my besottment does not end with these charming royal purple flowers abloom in the garden. There is a greater energy swirling about… My special and most lovely friend Hillary gifted me with a custom-made anointing oil, which she made solely (soul-ly) for me, intuitively blending the fragrance, informed by a source of life stories, dreams, and personal goals I shared with her. Her parcel arrived in the mail just as I was pleasantly losing myself in the process of working with this violet image. Oh the swell of my heart the moment I saw the label on the bottle! Hillary duly named it Violet Bird Heart. The serendipity! — in complete cosmic congruence with my violet obsession and this poem, which I recently made (a print of it hangs on Hillary’s wall). When I uncapped the alluring amber vessel, I felt warm and floaty upon inhaling its soulful scent …earthy, sweet, dark and uplifting all woven into one. It is me. The scent of my soul, if it were to have a scent. I am not embellishing when I say that each inhalation of this mystical potion feels quite out-of-body for me. And, the bottle holds a small amethyst crystal which chimes lightly when I shake the oil. I cannot conjure up adequate words to express the deep-soul feelings I have about this precious gift and what it means to me; only to say that it makes me feel like there is a waking bird in my heart. Hillary is a sensitive, intuitive, light-filled, giving soul and talented perfumist. I invite you to visit her dreamy, sumptuous website and apothecary, Lush Folk, “a nourishing, bohemian hideaway for women who long to make their lives a luscious work of art.” She will captivate and awaken you with her wild, spirited, graceful ways. Her offerings are like honey for the heart, as she so fittingly puts it. Big sigh.
